evolution…

is the overall guiding principle behind outlander. Each vehicle is a development of the one that came before it. However, as we all know, sometimes a group within a species separates and follows its own distinct evolutionary path.

the evo range of Defenders has done just that.

The evo1 began as a bit of an experiment, using parts that had been accumulated but seemed to serve no direct purpose. The central feature was the roll hoop which had been bought on eBay for £30 speculatively. It was eventually galvanised and then tested in a Defender.

A bespoke canvas bikini hood was then developed to sit on top the roll hoop, with the tails and rear tie down stops running down the feet of the hoop. The hood could be rolled down at the sides and rear to fully enclose the cab.

The interior was similarly trimmed in canvas to provide an open air experience, along with the durability and practicality required.

Another key element was the widened stance, which combined with the soft top to establish a very distinctive and aggressive shape, not previously seen in the Defender.

The evo1 was initially very difficult to sell to the public and was not initially successful. However, it subsequently became an iconic , show winning vehicle, widely shared and reposted on social media. It remains one of the most instantly recognisable and widely copied custom Defenders on the planet.

evo1

was the first of the line and offered a distinct contrast to the increasingly comfort orientated Station Wagon line. It was rugged and bold, offering a more visceral and involved driving experience.

the evo2 was a direct development of that first car. As mentioned above, the first car was an amalgamation of parts, that evolved into the finished vehicle. The evo2 was a far more measured and deliberate take on that original vehicle.

the original roll hoop was redesigned with a bespoke, purpose made item. Every other part on the vehicle was redesigned and developed specifically for this Defender. Many new elements were designed and then filters through to the other lines of Defenders. This includes elements such as the bonnet louvres, bluetooth music system, Wenge hardwood, woven leather seats, CrispShift gearsticks, etc.

the evo2 then was indeed a true evolution of the evo1.

evo2

a more developed and detailed version of the first car. Combining the hyper detail and high end materials of the station wagon line with the rugged experience of the evo1.

This v8 series evolution moves closer to the original concept, with widened bodywork rather than bolt on extensions.
